Typically a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) controls chambers which are used to treat product using EO. The control system is used to accept user input regarding various parameters that control product processing in the Sterilizer, to log information related to user actions, to control the material handling system, and to control process. Ethylene oxide sterilization chambers can vary in size from just a few cubic feet to the size of a large railroad boxcar.

Before starting a cycle, operators need to download a load to a chamber. Loads are defined for items (or products) requiring a specific cycle definition to which they are married. Electronic signatures provide extra security such as detection of data altering.
